| RONALD "SUKI" KING is now not only the master of the draughts' board but also president of the Barbados Draughts Association (BDA). King, the World Go As You Please champion, was elected unopposed at the
association's annual general meeting on February 10. Even though the meeting had one of its biggest attendances
in the past decade, not a single vote was cast. By becoming president of the BDA, the body which he
founded almost two decades earlier, King is
now president of both draughts associations in Barbados. King founded the BDA, but was never president, and in 2003 he founded the
Barbados Checkers and Draughts Federation (BCDF) and held the top post from
the inception.
He had recently leveled a series of attacks against the BDA in the print and electronic media. Several nominations were made for the post of president but all were 'respectfully declined'. Only King accepted a nomination that was made from the floor, which, after some time had passed, was seconded. After other nominations made from the floor were declined, King was declared president. Members of the BCDF who offered King support, accepted nominations for the other posts on the committee. Since all of the many nominations from the floor for the same offices were declined, and being unchallenged, these members became the officers of the BDA. (EZS) |

| RONALD "SUKI" KING is no doubt a legend in his preferred sport of draughts. But he led his Suzukie Sukies team to an impressive 4-1 win over his former team Legends in a Division 3 match at the Table Tennis Centre last Friday night. King and Albert Collymore Sr were the two key players for the Sukies, while their third player Javon Joseph was the team's weakest link. The only set the Sukies lost was that of Joseph's, who went under at 6, 8, and 8 to Legends' veteran player Vere "Rubber Legs" Ramsay. Collymore had given the Sukies an early 1-0 lead when he defeated Julian Ifill in straight games, at 8, 7, and 6. King, the Sukies captain, then made it 2-0 with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Edwin Jordan. The first two games see-sawed as both players tried to gain the upper hand, but King managed to eke out a 12-10, 13-11 win in both of them to go ahead 2-0. However, Jordan won the third game 11-7, reducing King's lead to 2-1. But King was not to be denied as he stepped up a gear in what turned out to be the fourth and final game, which he took at 11-5 and the match 3-1. Ramsay gave Legends their only victory by stopping the youthful Joseph in straight games, at 6, 8, and 8. King then teamed up with Collymore in the doubles and the pair dispatched Ifill and John Philips 11-8, 11-6, 11-7 to give their team a 3-1 lead. Collymore returned and put the icing on the cake by easily overcoming Jordan 11-10, 11-4, 11-2, as Sukies romped to an easy 4-1 win. (TE) |
